Sometimes it snows in the high desert

We usually get a few inches of snow a couple times a year down on the desert floor of Southern NM. The roads were a little s lush and some ice here and there, b ut not enough to really be fun. I love driving in the snow.

This was enough for most things to be on a 2 hours delay down here, because most folks around here are soft and struggle to drive on a wet road, much less one with anything frozen on it. The County wasn’t on a 2 hour delay, but I still got to play in the snow with the head of household security before work. The other dog has never been impressed by snow and just waits at the door to go back into the land warmth, food and dog couches.

I could totally peg passing cars on atleast n orthbound I-25 and the frontage road with snowballs, but that wouldn’t be excelle nt to each other so I didn’t. My inner 12-year old certainly thought about it though.

I know its the opposite end of the state but you ever spend time near Taos? I am thinking about heading there to ski in March since its on my pass and flights to ABQ are cheap. Only time Ive ever been to NM was the one night camping and two half-days driving while going across the country. Seems like a beautiful state that I need to explore more! I am sure it is more than just desert and meth.

I skied there when I was 13 and loved it! I’m sure nothing has changed at all, lol. Well actually, back then snowboarders weren’t allowed.

Holy shit I just googled it to be sure, and they were one of the last holdouts, opening to snowboarders only on March 19, 200 8!!

Taos is world-class skiing. You won’t be disappointed. There is also a bunch of other ski areas in Northern NM all within a few hours of each other if you base yourself in Santa Fe or Taos. Taos is also a neat place, especially if wander into the actual Pueblo.

Be wary about NM, as the land of entrapment you might end up not wanting to leave if spend long enough here. It a wonderful place. While I’m not at all opposed to living somewhere else someday if the right opportunity came up , I also have sepecial desire to do so as a life-long New Mexican.

You'd probably want to plan for earlier in March before it starts warming up too much.  Spring skiing gets a little slushy in the afternoon, but is offset by being able to ski in a t-shirt some afternoons.

Oh yeah my plan was the first weekend in march. Hoping to get one of those late season storms but spring skiing is fine too! My alternatives are to head to Denver or back to Mammoth again. New Mexico just seems far more interesting.

Also, my favorite style of Mexican food is probably the sort that comes from NM!

Well theres still places with no snowboarders like Alta, Deer Valley, and Mad River Glen (VT). But yeah thats wild how long they lasted at Taos too! Its interesting because both Alta and MRG definitely will allow snowboarders to ride, if they earn their turns, they just cant take the lift. Whereas Deer Valley is most certainly going to kick you out for trying that.

I am.  Maybe we'll have to do an Oppo mini meet.  There an Oppo in El Paso and a couple up in North.

Taos is magical. Unless you’re a beginner, then I’d visit Taos but ski Angel Fire. Taos is hard enough to get to that it isn’t overrun with tourists (yes I’m looking at you Colorado), just Texans spinning out on the roads and clogging up the Green runs. I can say that because I was one of those Texans :)

Yeah I avoid green and blue runs unless conditions are bad so I’m not a beginner. Sounds like a place I’d enjoy! I’m hoping to find good tree runs and although I’m not a fan of hiking too much, it seems like the place where I will enjoy my time more if I do at least a couple of earning my turn trails.

Then Taos is the place for you. Enjoy!!
